Stop Waiting for Engagement on Social Media—Start Creating It

2 (6)

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why LinkedIn feels different from other social platforms.

And honestly? It’s the people.

There’s a core group that keeps showing up. The same familiar names pop up in the comments. They cheer each other on, share insights, and keep the momentum going.

It’s not just content — it’s community. And that doesn’t happen by accident.

The Difference Between Posting and Performing

Most people only focus on reactive engagement — responding to DMs, replying to comments, liking posts here and there.

But if you want your content to perform, you need to shift to being more proactive.

Because when you show up for others, they’re more likely to show up for you.And when your content starts getting attention early on?

📈 The algorithm notices.
📣 Your reach grows.
🙌 People actually start engaging back.

Think about it — when someone drops a thoughtful comment on your post or sends a message about something you shared…don’t you want to return the favor?

That’s how relationships are built.

And here’s the thing most people overlook:

Being 1 of 100 likes on a referral partner’s post means they may not even realize you liked it…But being 1 of 5 comments on nearly every post? That builds goodwill, and will definitely be remembered and appreciated.

Real example: Just last week, I saw that someone tagged me in a LinkedIn comment thread recommending my content to another pro in their network – because they’d seen me show up consistently and remembered my name.

IMG_3966It wasn’t even on my own post – it was the comments of someone else’s post, but I’m the one who walked away with new followers because of that tag (and because I jumped in and joined the conversation).

That’s the kind of visibility that leads to referrals and real relationships.

So how do you do that without spending hours each day on social media?

Try the 10/10/10 Engagement Rule:
🕑 Spend 10 minutes
💬 Leave 10 thoughtful comments
📲 Respond to 10 Stories or posts with a DM

Just a few intentional minutes a day can completely change how your content performs. But here’s the key: These interactions should be real, not rehearsed.

Comment to connect, not to pitch.
DM to build relationships, not to drop links.

People remember who supports them. And real support doesn’t come with a sales agenda.

Why It Works:

  • You become more visible to the right people
  • Your name shows up in comments and DMs (which are way more memorable than likes)
  • You show the algorithm that your account is active and worth engaging with
  • You turn your content into a conversation — not a broadcast

Want to Take It Further?

Find an engagement buddy — someone who hypes your content and who you’ll show up for in return. (Accountability and good vibes? Win-win.)
